Job Description

Responsibilities

Provide a wide array of technology, training, consultation, project and support services to Field, Engineering, Operations Logistics, and Pipeline Safety and other distribution groups and personnel to enable effective use of multiple operations support computer application systems. Coordinate development, support and maintenance activities related to operations support technologies.  

This job family provides basic through advanced support to Columbia business applications users of the Columbia Work Management System (WMS), Work Labor Reporting System (WLRS), WMS.Net, NiFast, WMSDocs, Distributive/Customer Information System (DIS/CIS), Ventyx, EASI/Workbrain and related integrations. WMS is a highly complex integrated asset and work management system that is mainframe based, Cobol programs, DB2 database design, with 2000+ end users and a system of record for all operational work performed by the Columbia Gas distribution companies, both Capital and O&M.  Related applications include:  McJunkin Redman, FDM, ARI, Budgetwiser, PowerPlant-Asset Accounting System, CCV, SOA, PeopleSoft AP & GL, CRM, and SNAP Provers.  

Team members are responsible for working in collaboration with business stakeholders and IT service providers to implement break/fix changes and application enhancements both large and small.

  • Facilitate the resolution of break/fix requests, security requests and ISM tickets requests for suite of supported applications
  • Informed and engaged Operating personnel in regards to maximum utilization of supported suite of applications and dependent operational support systems

  • Continuously improved technical solutions through implementation of break/fixes
  • Timely, accurate status reporting to management

Applications Specialist 1

  • Support business application users taking primary responsibility for the management of the Business Applications Support Service Requests, Application
  • Support email box for WMS, WLRS, WMS.Net, NiFast, WMSDocs, EASI/Workbrain, and general requests 
  • Analyze and identify basic functional and/or technical issues within the suite of supported applications taking action to resolve, escalate technical issues with IT vendor and/or recommend appropriate solutions
  • Perform basic security configuration for suite of support applications
  • Provide first level of support for ISM ticketing creation or resolution
  • Resolve basic exception reporting issues with PeopleSoft FTH accounting and Workbrain/EASI payroll issues
  • Identify complex issues for escalation
  • Prepare detailed monthly statistics for support requests, security requests and ISM ticket activities
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently and with appropriate supervision 
  • Promote a safe work environment by actively participating in all aspects of our employee safety program
  • Support a positive work environment for all 
  • Limited travel  
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Applications Specialist 2

All duties and responsibilities as stated in Apps Spec 1 and:   

  • Perform advanced security configuration for suite of supported applications
  • Provide advanced level of support for ISM ticket creation or resolution
  • Resolve complex exception reporting issues with PeopleSoft FTH accounting and Workbrain/EASI payroll issues
  • Perform advanced application configurations of system updates
  • A key interface between distribution operation personnel and other system support staffs in areas such as extended troubleshooting and problem identification
  • Support Operations Compliance and Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) audits
  • Support functional consistency, process standardization and operational excellence 
  • Identify and document business process
  • Identify and resolve third party material vendor issues
  • Support and participate in training delivery
  • Mentor and train peers in basic application functionality 
  • Prepare test plans, participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) and document results    
  • Support the creation of, and help maintain, application user guides/ documentation  
  • Analyze and identify functional and/or technical issues within existing applications or technical environment and recommend appropriate solution or alternative resolution
  • Analyze and recommend processes to assist operating personnel in the effective utilization of operations support systems  
  • Analyze and recommend training needs determined from ¿mailbox¿/email, phone, and onsite interactions
  • Partner with other business groups and assist as needed to investigate and test various business applications break/fix issues
  • Consultant to other business departments on suite of applications
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Consistent organization, prioritization, planning and scheduling of work 
  • Off-hours testing availability required

Senior Applications Specialist

All duties and responsibilities as stated in Apps Spec 1 & 2 and:   

  • Act as a key interface between operation personnel and other system support staffs in areas such as extended trouble shooting across multiple applications, problem identification and resolution, including systems modifications and enhancements
  • Lead and Facilitate end user requirement gathering and develop functional specifications; interface with business/functional representatives to develop solid understanding of business and technology requirements
  • Proactively identify functional and/or technical issues within existing applications or technical environment and recommend appropriate remedy or solution  
  • Provide input as a team member to project planning activities and business case development for new initiatives; communicate application and project status and, when necessary, identify potential issues or opportunities
  • Lead testing on projects as well as following application enhancements, system upgrades, and/or application problem fixes 
  • Be recognized by business partners as Subject Matter Experts on supported systems and related applications 
  • Provide post implementation functional and technical support on any application enhancement or upgrade 
  • Identify training needs, create training material and conduct training classes as required 
  • Analyze and interpret data (reports) for operational issues that will assist in decision making processes
  • Perform data mining, adhoc reporting as necessary
  • Partner with other business groups and assist as needed to design, build, test and deploy various business applications enhancements 
  • Process and Approve SOX IT enhancement TPRs and Business Approvals
  • Monitor, investigate, certify and report on compliance of SOX control testing
  • Back up approver to applicable 404 Security Requests
  • Identify and communicate emergency system issues
  • Mentor and train peers on complex application functionality
  • Lead small projects within the team or limited business partners 
  • Understand a broad range of business and industry processes outside own sphere; apply this knowledge properly and proactively to achieve goals
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently with little or no supervision
  • Respond appropriately when faced with difficult situations and/or high demand situations through independent and original thinking
  • Act as a consultant to other business departments on items having work management ties 
  • Solve problems and resolve issues utilizing innovative approaches

Lead Applications Specialist

All duties and responsibilities as stated in Apps Spec 1, 2 & Senior, and:

  • Utilize advanced subject matter knowledge in technical applications and operations to mentor, coach, educate and advance peers in skill sets and core competencies
  • Utilize demonstrated advanced system integration knowledge competency in appropriate root cause determination through data analysis and interpretation
  • Provide team leadership across process improvement and major technology implementation projects
  • Consistently display strong collaboration with operations management in delivering subject matter expertise to assist in achieving strategic objectives
  • Strong reputation partnering with Pipeline Safety and Compliance groups to ensure compliance through monitoring and evaluating data and results against regulatory codes and internal procedures
  • Successfully analyze and recommend technology solutions to address operational process improvement needs
  • Track record of fostering customer satisfaction
  • Assist in the developing of strategic direction for the enterprise in the use of suite of applications
  • Significant experience utilizing and enhancing operations support systems and related applications
  • A mentor and coach to others on the team relating to all supported applications
  • Lead complex projects

Qualifications

Required for Selection- Apps Spec 1

  • One year experience with WMS/WLRS business applications
  • General knowledge of natural gas policies and procedures 
  • Understanding of basic NIFiT financial concepts 
  • Ability to use standard suite of NiSource PC applications 
  • Experience working under tight deadlines 
  • Experience working independently
  • College Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Natural gas operations and/or customer service support experience 
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Demonstrated problem analysis and solving
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DIS and/or CIS 
  • Knowledge in the public utility regulatory environment


Required for Selection¿ Apps Spec 2

  • Two years¿ experience with WMS/WLRS business applications
  • Cross application knowledge required
  • Advanced knowledge of natural gas policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear, concise, and positive communications 
  • Demonstrated consistent organization, prioritization, planning and scheduling of work

  • Three to Five years¿ experience with suite of supported business applications

  • Demonstrated WMS Category expert
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of cross application integrations/interfaces

  • Proven Subject Matter Expert (SME) level knowledge of multiple WMS Supported applications
  • Expert in all WMS categories
  • Five years¿ experience with WMS/WLRS 
  • Understanding of financial concepts and PeopleSoft integration
  • Advanced knowledge of standard suite of NiSource PC applications 
  • Strong problem solving capabilities, including the ability to interpret and clarify technical issues to stakeholders 
  • Demonstrated experience working under tight deadlines 
  • Demonstrated experience working independently in high-priority situations 
  • Demonstrated understanding of business case justification methodology used to recommend process improvements or technology enhancements
  • Demonstrated leadership in project management
