Job Description


Purpose:Achieve a positive external and internal environment through proactive communications and community relations to support Columbia Gas of Massachusetts Restoration Activities so that the company can realize its financial and nonfinancial business objectives in a consistent and seamless manner across the organization, and across NiSource as appropriate.

 Key Results:

  • External and internal outreach
  • Support Operations communications needs in respective areas
  • Event management (internal and external)
  • Work with Director, Communications, Municipal Relations and Community Engagement to research, develop and implement a strategic, integrated internal and external communications plan
  • Generate positive media coverage on issues and initiatives, and through involvement/ support of community activities
  • Internal issues management
  • Oversight and management of company social media outlets
  • Represent company as a good corporate citizen through development of solid relationships with key stakeholders

 Essential Responsibilities:

Issues Identification and Management/Operations Support.   Identify the need for, develop and implement communication plans to address external and internal audiences, including strategies, time lines and vehicles.

  • In concert with Operations management, maintain positive relationships with key media and executive management to not only support operations, but to leverage their support in dealing with issues and incidents that may negatively impact the company.
  •  Position the company as one that promotes safety, customer service and reliability ¿ responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coordination of media campaigns on issues as required and notification of actions to public and elected officials.

Business Partner.  At the direction of the Director of Communications and Community Relations, provide strategic external and internal communications support and counsel: facilitate effective relationships with key media; identify opportunities to favorably position market leaders; strategic support to effectively engage local advertising, sponsorships; crisis communications planning and execution. Identify and bring best practice expertise regarding meeting planning and event management.  

 Media Relations

  • Be knowledgeable and aware of all media outlets and reporters within service territory, as well as issues within the company that may attract media attention
  • At the direction of the Director of Communications and Community Relations, generate positive media coverage on company initiatives, industry news, and other company activities through news releases and internal company newsletter articles.
  • Mirror business partner section with external media

 Internal Communications

  • Support the company's internal communications strategy
  • Ensure organizational initiatives and projects are successfully communicated to employees and stakeholders
  • Plan, edit and write content for a variety of internal communications mediums
  • Ensure internal communications messages are consistent across all mediums and for different departments of the organization
  • Ensure internal communication messages are consistent with external communication messages
  • Help in the dissemination of internal communications in response to crisis situations which affect organizational perception and reputation

 Social Media Coordination

  • Build and execute social media strategy in collaboration with the Communication and Community team
  • Generate, edit, publish and share content (original text, images, video) that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action
  • Monitor customer feedback for each region in the Greater Lawrence footprint
  • Create editorial calendars
  • Capture and analyze the appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices, and then acting on the information
  • Collaborate with other departments (operations, regulatory, new business, communications and community relations) to manage reputation, identify key players and coordinate actions

 Community Relations Activities

  • Support the Manager of Community Engagement in executing community development initiatives throughout the territory
  • Help to plan, develop and implement programs to promote community awareness
  • Supervising the image of the organization within the community
  • Serve as the 'face of Columbia' in the assigned territory

 Graphic Design Experience

  • Create visual concepts, using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate.
  • Develop the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.

 Required for Selection: 

  1. Bachelor's degree in communications, public affairs or other related concentration with 2-3 years of communications experience either in a corporate government or agency setting
  2. Proven strong written skills
  3. Strong verbal communication skills
  4. Ability to manage multiple projects at one time
  5. Ability to analyze and solve problems
  6. Ability to establish credibility and support the organization¿s preferences and priorities
  7. Ability to manage and respond during an emergency situation

 Preferred for Selection:

  1. External media and community relations experience
  2. Internal communications experience
  3. Utility or other regulated industry experience
  4. Bilingual candidate
