Job Description

  • Develop and deliver on strategic communications plans in support of the state and NiSource business goals.
  • Plan, direct and implement comprehensive communications strategy and tactics to enhance knowledge and understanding with key stakeholders; ensure engagement, commitment, and allocation of resources; support and promote consistency of messaging and branding across the organization. 
  • Serve as an active member of the State Leadership team; collaborate with State President, State VP/GM, other key operating company departments and Corporate Affairs in developing communications plans and strategies
  • Provide strategic communications counsel to state leaders and their teams.
  • Provide leadership for state's involvement in communities where it provides service
  • Lead and manage individual and team performance, including employee development, in delivering on communications plan tactics
  • Establish metrics to measure effectiveness of communication initiatives.
  • Reports to the VP of External and Customer Affairs.


  • Increased brand perception and media placement
  • Effective communications counsel to state leadership team, aligned with Corporate Communications priorities as measured by feedback from business partners.
  • On plan budget management
  • Increased employee engagement and understanding of key initiatives and messages, with special focus on NI/State Commitments
  • Team performance linked to accomplishment of state business goals

External Communications and Community Relations

  • Develop, foster and enhance media relationships to provide fair coverage of news affecting the state
  • Coordinate communications response to key audiences during crisis situations
  • Active pursuit of opportunities, with priority on safety and customer service messaging, across all media channels and delivery on multi-media, multi-channel strategy
  • Develop and execute on advertising plan to promote safety messaging in support of Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP).
  • Engage with key external stakeholders and internal partners to build awareness of construction and operations activities in local communities, and coordinate responses and strategies as needed.
  • Effectively manage Community Relations/Charitable program in a manner that aligns with stakeholder commitments and leverages the company¿s visibility and trust in the community
  • Provide communications support for employee/company activities and sponsorships in the community

Internal Communications:

  • Support President, VP/GM and leadership in providing regular, consistent messaging across all operating areas related to state commitments and expectations
  • Deliver on multi-channel, multi-media communications initiatives to strengthen employee engagement
  • Serve in advisory role to the I&D Council¿s development and execution of its communication strategy and plan.
  • Oversee support for State President and VP/GM in preparing for, and conducting various employee and leadership meetings

Required for selection:

  • Communications coaching and teaching, both written and verbal
  • Interpersonal influence and negotiation; ability to effectively execute in a matrixed organizational structure.
  • Effective project management in support of communications planning and strategy development, and execution on identified initiatives
  • Demonstrated writing and communications skills
  • General business acumen
  • Experience in Customer, Communications, Public Affairs, Government Relations, Marketing or a related field, preferably with experience in energy public relations or communications OR experience in gas operations, regulatory or other utility experience.
  • Bachelor¿s degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven results-oriented record, with ability to develop effective strategies quickly to respond to changing circumstances, the ability to understand and communicate complex issues clearly and accurately, and the ability to execute tactical activities.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills. Outstanding, demonstrated communication skills and superior attention to detail, with ability to manage several projects simultaneously
  • Detail-oriented, well-organized self-starter with the ability to work well with all levels of management. Excellent relationship-building skills. Must possess a sense of urgency and focus.
  • Experience with project planning, implementation, execution and continuous improvement
  • PC software proficiency (ie. Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Proven ability to work across departments collaboratively to resolve issues, drive projects to closure, achieve desired results/goals, and/or implement change as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and counsel senior management. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability leading a team and managing vendors and a budget.
  • Some travel required.
  • May require participation in person on site or by phone, in emergency company situations at night and on weekends
