Job Description

Introduction

The Accounting Research department offers a dynamic environment in which team members are presented with the opportunity for continuous learning and engagement. Our department provides visibility into newly issued accounting standards and newly initiated Company transactions, with a focus on non-routine project-based responsibilities. We regularly collaborate with different departments and third-party service providers in order to ensure understanding of and compliance with accounting and reporting standards.

Responsibilities
  • Perform technical research and utilize findings to develop position papers addressing complex accounting issues, non-recurring transactions, new accounting guidance, etc.
  • Assist in the effort to implement the new lease standard.
  • Review and evaluate the impact of new or revised rules of the FASB, AICPA, SEC and other agencies.
  • Keep current with emerging accounting and reporting guidance and trends including FASB standards and interpretations, and SEC releases and speeches. Prepare summaries that include the potential impacts to the Company.
  • Participate in the economic analysis of business opportunities and proposals.
  • Develop and maintain corporate accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support the integration of newly promulgated accounting standards into corporate accounting policies.
  • Design workflows to assist in the compliance with GAAP disclosure requirements.
  • Perform benchmarking through review of financial reports of other utilities and SEC registrants and recommend and implement enhancements to NiSource's SEC reports and disclosures.
  • Identify and understand emerging business issues affecting the company and energy industry and provide accounting recommendations to address the issues.
  • Partner with budgeting / financial planning groups to ensure budget timing for planned transactions aligns with GAAP recognition timing.
Qualifications
  • Innate curiosity as well as a demonstrated enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
  • Eagerness to tackle accounting issues, find solutions and solve problems.
  • Acts as a self-starter and possesses the ability to work both collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and solid understanding of current generally accepted accounting principles and SEC reporting requirements.
  • Broad technical accounting knowledge including knowledge of accounting for leases, pensions and other postretirement benefits, treasury activities, equity-based compensation plans, business combinations, restructurings, goodwill, contingencies, discontinued operations and impairments, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance priorities while addressing complex tasks and issues.
  • Strong communication skills including excellent written, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based PC applications.

KEY WORK EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION

All analyst levels

  • Willingness to take on responsibility and challenging work assignments.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and SEC reporting requirements.
  • At least two years relevant work experience in accounting and financial reporting.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.

 Analyst I and Analyst II

  • 0-3 years of experience in finance, accounting, regulatory or a related field

 Senior Analyst

  • 3-6 years of experience in finance, accounting, regulatory or a related field
  • Requires multiple functional experience

 Lead Analyst

  • 7 years or more experience in finance, accounting, regulatory or a related field
  • Requires multiple functional experience
