Under general supervision, the Gas Control Supervisor is responsible for the operation of the NIPSCO Gas Transmission system.  This position is responsible for projecting daily gas demand and ensuring supply is adequate to serve our residential, commercial, and industrial customers.  Duties include participating in a 24 hour, 7 day shift rotation. This position is safety sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

  • Generate on daily basis a 5 day demand forecast for NIPSCO customers in total and for select markets.
  • Safely balance overall daily gas demand with supply such that adequate swing is available.
  • Develop daily supply strategy which includes line pack, storage, LNG, supplier targets, system pressure and flow requirements.
  • Participate in daily planning meetings with department personnel.
  • Maintain and generate daily and monthly reports to confirm gas volumes, BTU¿s, and supplier closing information for use in forecasting and reconciliation.
  • Work and communicate effectively with internal and external departments in a very dynamic environment.
  • Ability to perform duties effectively under normal, abnormal, and emergency situations according to Control Room Management (CRM) Roles and Responsibilities document. Implement Gas System Emergency Operating Plans when required.
  • Supervise Gas Controllers and correctly apply provisions of the collective bargaining contract.
  • Achieve and maintain DOT Operator Qualification (OQ) for Gas Controller duties.
  • Perform Gas Controller duties as needed to cover vacancies or support operations.
  • Work extended hours, varying shifts, and participates in a standby rotation when necessary.
  • Comply with all professional training, ethics policies, and uphold core values of the department and company

Required for Selection:

  • Must successfully pass Console Operator Basic Requirements Assessment (COBRA) aptitude evaluation.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills. 
  • Adhere to all PHMSA Control Room Management (CRM) rule requirements.
  • Have knowledge of, or ability to learn and troubleshoot, fluid dynamic and thermodynamic concepts including pressures, flows, and gas laws. 
  • Possess intermediate to advanced PC skills, especially proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.   
  • Ability to explain advanced concepts in a way that a person with little gas or mechanical background can understand and become competent at controlling the NIPSCO Gas Transmission System.

  • Must reside within a 1-hour commute to Primary Gas Control Center in Hammond, IN.

Preferred for Selection:

  • Firm understanding of engineering principles, especially as they relate to energy, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics. 
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. 
  • Demonstrated management or leadership experience. 
  • Experience administering a Bargaining Unit agreement.   

Education/Work Experience:

Required for Selection:

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited college.

Preferred for Selection:

  • BS in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology, or another quantitative discipline with relevant experience.
  • Possess a working understanding of the State and Federal Regulatory requirements, gas transmission systems, and gas energy markets. 
  • 1+ years of work experience in a gas utility or related industry.
