Job Description


The Accounting Research department offers a dynamic environment in which team members are presented with the opportunity for continuous learning and engagement. Our department provides visibility into newly issued accounting standards and newly initiated Company transactions, with a focus on non-routine project-based responsibilities. We regularly collaborate with different departments and third-party service providers in order to ensure understanding of and compliance with accounting and reporting standards. The Manager of Accounting Policy and Research reports to the Director of External Reporting, Accounting Research and Consolidations.

  • Supervise and develop staff members to provide a center of technical accounting excellence for the business to consult with.
  • Keep current with emerging accounting and financial reporting guidance and trends including FASB standards and interpretations, and SEC releases and speeches. Present summaries that include the potential impacts to NiSource.
  • Network with counterparts from NiSource peers to identify and share best practices within the regulated utility industry. 
  • Contribute to economic analysis of business opportunities and proposals.
  • Develop position papers to address complex accounting issues, non-recurring transactions, new accounting guidance, etc.
  • Review and evaluate the impact of new or revised rules of the FASB, AICPA, SEC and other agencies.
  • Coordinate and monitor the integration of newly promulgated accounting standards into corporate accounting policies.
  • Design workflows to assist in the compliance with GAAP disclosure requirements.
  • Review financial reports of other utilities and SEC registrants and recommend and implement enhancements to NiSource's SEC reports and disclosures.
  • Identify and understand emerging business issues affecting the company and energy industry and provide accounting recommendations to address the issues.
  • Partner with budgeting / financial planning, treasury and tax to ensure budget timing for planned transactions aligns with GAAP recognition timing.
  • Proven ability to coordinate projects and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication skills including excellent written and presentation skills.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and solid understanding of current generally accepted accounting principles and SEC reporting requirements.
  • Broad technical accounting knowledge including knowledge of accounting for leases, pensions and other postretirement benefits, treasury activities, equity-based compensation plans, restructurings, goodwill impairment analysis, contingencies and impairments, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex tasks and issues.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based PC applications.

Education/Work Experience

  • CPA required.
  • At least six years relevant work experience in accounting and financial reporting.
  • Prior record of supervisory experience in an accounting environment.
  • Proven ability to successfully lead projects and staff.
  • Working knowledge of FASB and SEC reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in coordinating activities across functions.
  • Willingness to take on responsibility and challenging work assignments.
