Job Description


Purpose:  Achieve a positive external and internal environment through proactive communication and community relations to support Columbia Gas of Massachusetts Restoration Effort in the Greater Lawrence Area to support the company in realizing financial and nonfinancial business objectives in a consistent and seamless manner across the organization, and across NiSource as appropriate.

Key Results:

  • External and internal outreach
  • Work with the Columbia Gas of Massachusetts Restoration Effort leadership team to develop and implement a strategic, integrated internal and external communications plan
  • Generate positive media coverage on issues and initiatives, and through involvement/ support of community activities.
  • Assure a positive Social Media presence and anticipate both proactive and reactive social media policy
  • Internal issues management.
  • Proactively anticipate the needs of Operation and Construction communications needs in respective areas.
  • Provide communications counsel across all organizational levels.
  • Evaluate and manage Communications consultants
  • Monitor and manage communications budgets and expenditures
  • Participate as a part of the larger NiSource Communications community to enhance Corporate communications
  • Influence and improve upon Columbia Gas of Massachusetts¿ image as measured by J.D. Power

 Essential Responsibilities:

Work with the Director of Communications, Municipal Relations, and Community Engagement, along with senior leadership, to provide exemplary communications support to aid in the safe and effective operations of Columbia Gas of Massachusetts in the Greater Lawrence Area.

 Media Relations

  • Oversee Crisis Communications plan and work with Corporate Affairs team to develop enhanced crisis communications efforts resulting from the Greater Lawrence incident
  • Oversee Social Media Strategy, response and monitoring, including proactive strategy and social customer care
  • Cultivate and enhance collaborative working relationships within the local and national press and publicity community as well as with trade media
  • Manage the flow of news about the organization to the media and report results to Greater Lawrence Area leadership team
  • Act as a media spokesperson on behalf of the company and address questions and complaints.
  • Plan and oversee press events.
  • Detect public relations issues as they emerge, report them to senior leadership and address them directly
  • Compose and edit press releases, company literature, and articles for internal and external use
  • Develop, foster and enhance media relationships while demonstrating an ability to influence media to further the Company¿s goals
  • Be knowledgeable and aware of all media outlets and reporters within service territory, as well as issues within the company that may attract media attention
  • Generate positive media coverage on company initiatives, industry news, and other company activities.
  • Act as the ¿face¿ of Greater Lawrence Area (Andover, Lawrence and North Andover) in emergency response situations
  • Oversee the strategic media relations plan to help the company rebuild, protect and promote its image in a coordinated, and consistent manner

 Operations Support

  • Identify the need for, develop and implement communication plans to address external and internal audiences, including strategies, timelines and methodologies
  • Work closely with Operations and Executive management team to respond to media inquiries related to operational issues and emergency response, and maintain positive relationships with key media contacts.
  • Positon the company as one that promotes safety, customer service and reliability

 Capital Program Support and Community Relations

  • Partner with the Manager of Community Engagement to actively support efforts in the community to promote and engage customers of Columbia Gas of PA/MD
  • Proactively work to identify opportunities to align media relations, government relations and community engagement to promote Columbia Gas of PA/MD as a community partner

 Business Partner

  • Provide strategic external and internal communications support and counsel
  • Provide strategic support to effectively engage local advertising and sponsorships
  • Identify and bring best practice expertise regarding meeting planning and event management

 Internal/Employee Communications:

  • Produce articles for inclusion on company website or employee newsletters
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of internal communications, and recommend and implement enhancements
  • Actively participate as a communications lead on employee engagement teams, I&D councils, safety teams and other internal initiatives as needed

 Web and Social Media:

  • Develop content for different online social media channels (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter)
  • Ensure social media accounts are updated in accordance with platform updates and layout changes
  • Design communications to engage customers and stakeholders on social media
  • Respond to complaints and compliments as appropriate and within the expected timeframe

 Public Awareness

  • Provide communications support to program informing key stakeholder audiences about natural gas and pipeline safety
  • Educate the public about specific safe digging practices including one-call notification

 Required for Selection: 

  1. Bachelors degree in communications, public affairs or other related concentration with 5-10 years of communications experience either in a corporate government or agency setting
  2. Media relations experience
  3. Excellent relationship-building skills/savvy
  4. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  5. Ability to manage and respond during an emergency situation
  6. Ability to deal with ambiguity and effectively manage multiple projects at one time
  7. Ability to analyze and solve problems
  8. Ability to establish credibility and support the organization¿s preferences and priorities
  9. Ability to work across organizational boundaries
  10. Experience working with external  stakeholders and community relations

 Preferred for Selection:

  1. Internal communications experience
  2. Utility or other regulated industry knowledge and experience
  3. Bilingual Candidate
