Job Description


The Financial Analyst provides value-added financial services to both internal and external customers. The incumbent may assume responsibility for financial activities, including but not limited to reviewing and interpreting the impact of financial reporting proposals promulgated by governing bodies; preparing analytical studies on historical, forecast, and pro-forma financial data; developing comprehensive financial data reports for both internal and external customers; and providing other needed expertise and reporting to accurately reflect and manage financial matters.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions; uses effective approaches for choosing course of action or developing appropriate solutions; takes action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.   • Compile, organizes and formats data, including qualitative analysis required for internal and external reporting. Identifies and researches reporting issues, provides recommendations, assists with the adoption of new reporting requirements. (Reporting)
  • Recognizes situations where the regulatory framework and rate case outcomes drive our business; Supports regulatory initiatives by gathering data and preparing regulatory schedules and/or preparing pro-forma calculations, testimony and data requests; Assists with review and analysis of regulatory documents; Appreciates the application of the regulatory construct to our business.   • Demonstrates a working knowledge of financial statements, metrics and measures, and key strategic business initiatives; Understands and utilizes economic and industry data as it relates to job responsibilities (Business Acumen)
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the operating plan and role in the F&A organizaiton; has a general knowledge of other department's role in the F&A organization; collaboratively develops solutions between corporate and businss units. Technical Accounting Responsibilities:

  • Research complex business transactions and provide the appropriate accounting guidance to the business.
  • Evaluate the impact of new or revised rules of the FASB, AICPA, SEC and other agencies
  • Coordinate and monitor the integration of newly promulgated accounting standards into accounting policies and processes.
  • Prepare response letters to FASB and SEC exposure drafts that impact NiSource or the public utility industry.
  • Develop and maintain corporate accounting policies and procedures.
  • Document conclusions in technical accounting memos that address complex accounting issues, non-recurring transactions, new accounting guidance, etc.
  • Design and implement workflows to assist in the compliance with GAAP and SEC disclosure requirements.
  • Keep current with emerging accounting and reporting guidance and trends including FASB standards and interpretations, and SEC releases and speeches. Prepare summaries that include the potential impacts to the Company. Present findings to affected business partners.
  • Review financial reports of other utilities and SEC registrants and recommend and implement enhancements to NiSource's SEC reports and disclosures.
  • Technical accounting areas of focus: stock-based compensation, goodwill impairment analysis, leases, revenue recognition, regulated operations, capitalization vs. expense, pension and other postretirement benefits, materiality, debt and equity financings, hedging and derivatives, diluted EPS, financial statement presentation.
  • Interface with external auditors to ensure timely completion of financial statement audits and reviews.
  • Develop quarterly accounting issues summary.
  • Prepare certain disclosures and analysis (footnotes, MD&A, etc.) for the SEC fillings.
  • Consult in the economic analysis of business opportunities and proposals.
  • Identify and understand emerging business issues affecting the company and energy industry and provide accounting recommendations to address the issues.

Technical Accounting Desired Skills, Knowledge and Experiences

  • High ethical and moral character.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and current understanding of GAAP, SEC reporting and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.
  • Effective communication of key messages to all audiences, regardless of medium.

  • Experience researching technical accounting issues, building consensus with key stakeholders and documenting / communicating conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage business partner relationships through use of informal authority.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently coordinate projects and manage multiple priorities.

  • Experience with the following software applications: Oracle financial (PeopleSoft, Hyperion), Powerplant, GTreasury, Concur, Ariba, MS Office, Workiva.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for Accounting Financial Analyst Job Family:

Accounting Senior Financial Analyst:

  • Knowledge proficiency of Finance and Accounting principles, including the relationships between segments of the financial statements and communicating the context of financial scenarios. (e.g. balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow)
  • Knowledge proficiency of GAAP to analyze complex transactions; identifies accounting issues, researches applicable GAAP standards and consults with department management to develop and implement solutions.
  • Prepares regulatory financial statement and schedules, including routine regulatory filings, pro-forma calculations, testimony and data requests; assists with review and analysis of rate case support, new rate orders and accounting orders.
  • Analyze information from a variety of sources to detect trends, associations, cause-effect relationships and other anomalies and make recommendations.
  • Effectively manage time to ensure deadlines are met and quality is achieved by ensuring work is free from errors, omissions, or defects.
  • Consistently builds relationships and work collaboratively with different parts of finance as well as other parts of NiSource.
  • Takes action to accomplish work goals, achieve results beyond what is required, and be proactive

Key Work Experience/Education:

All analyst levels

  • Requires 4 year degree in business discipline
  • Requires knowledge of PC applications
  • Prefer CPA

Senior Analyst

  • 2-4 years of experience in finance, accounting, regulatory or a related field
  • Requires multiple functional experience
