Job Description

Introduction

The Financial Analyst provides value-added financial services to both internal and external customers. The incumbent may assume responsibility for financial activities, including but not limited to reviewing and interpreting the impact of financial reporting proposals promulgated by governing bodies; preparing analytical studies on historical, forecast, and pro-forma financial data; developing comprehensive financial dat reports for both internal and external customer; and providing other needed expertise and reporting to accurately reflect and manage financial matters.


Responsibilities

  • Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions; uses effective approaches for choosing course of action or developing appropriate solutions; takes action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.   • Compiles, organizes and formats data, including qualitative analysis required for internal and external reporting.  Identifies and researches reporting issues, provides recommendations, assists with the adoption of new reporting requirements. (Reporting)
  • Recognizes situations where the regulatory framework and rate case outcomes drive our business; Supports regulatory initiatives by gathering data and preparing regulatory schedules and/or preparing pro-forma calculations, testimony and data requests; Assists with review and analysis of regulatory documents; Appreciates the application of the regulatory construct to our business. External Reporting and Consolidation Responsibilities

  • Accurate compilations and timely filing of SEC and other external financial reports including 10-Q, 10-K, 8-K, 11-K, registration statements and state / Federal regulatory filings.
  • Review, evaluate and implement new or revised rules, publications and speeches of the FASB, AICPA, SEC and other agencies to ascertain impact on financial disclosures.
  • Review financial reports of other utilities and SEC registrants and recommend and implement enhancements to NiSource's external financial reports and disclosures.
  • Identify and understand emerging business issues affecting the company and energy industry to assess applicability to NiSource. 
  • Interface with external auditors to ensure timely completion of financial statement audits, reviews or other agreed-upon procedures.
  • Partner with Investor Relations and Corporate Communications for preparation and distribution of quarterly earnings release information and analysis.
  • Prepare quarterly earnings variance analysis for NiSource CFO.
  • Ensure the proper consolidation of NiSource operating company financial statement submissions, including:
  • Proper elimination of intercompany accounts.
  • Proper reclassification or netting of balances to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Monitoring the need for operating company resubmissions.
  • Review monthly consolidation of cash flow statement.
  • Administration and reporting of non-GAAP adjustments.
Qualifications

External Reporting and Consolidation Desired Skills, Knowledge and Experiences

  • High ethical and moral character.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and current understanding of GAAP, SEC reporting and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.
  • Effective communication of key messages to all audiences, regardless of medium.
  • Ability to respectfully support conclusions in the face of disagreement or challenge.
  • Experience researching technical accounting issues, building consensus with key stakeholders and documenting / communicating conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage business partner relationships through use of informal authority.
  • Innate curiosity and desire for continuous learning.
  • History of challenging the status-quo and execution of process improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently coordinate projects and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proven background of developing teammates and effectively delegating work. 
  • Understanding of the regulated utility industry.
  • Experience with the following software applications: Oracle financial (PeopleSoft, Hyperion), Powerplant, GTreasury, Concur, Ariba, MS Office, Workiva.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities for Accounting Financial Analyst Job Family:

Accounting Senior Financial Analyst

  • Knowledge proficiency of Finance and Accounting principles, including the relationships between segments of the financial statements and communicating the context of financial scenarios. (e.g. balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow)
  • Knowledge proficiency of GAAP to analyze complex transactions; identifies accounting issues, researches applicable GAAP standards and consults with department management to develop and implement solutions.
  • Prepares regulatory financial statement and schedules, including routine regulatory filings, pro-forma calculations, testimony and data requests; assists with review and analysis of rate case support, new rate orders and accounting orders.
  • Analyze information from a variety of sources to detect trends, associations, cause-effect relationships and other anomalies and make recommendations.
  • Effectively manage time to ensure deadlines are met and quality is achieved by ensuring work is free from errors, omissions, or defects.
  • Consistently builds relationships and work collaboratively with different parts of finance as well as other parts of NiSource.
  • Takes action to accomplish work goals, achieve results beyond what is required, and be proactive.

Key Work Experience/Education:

All analyst levels

  • Requires 4 year degree in business discipline
  • Requires knowledge of PC applications
  • Prefer CPA

 Senior Analyst

  • 2-4 years of experience in finance, accounting, regulatory or a related field
  • Requires multiple functional experience
