Job Description

Introduction

The Principal Engineer will sponsor and provide guidance to a system-wide electric transmission and distribution line design philosophy. Using advanced knowledge in electric T & D line engineering; the principal engineer will provide direction in the creation, documentation, and performance of line design standards, legal/regulatory and quality compliance standards, safety, recommended best practices, work scope determination, material specification preparation, bid evaluation, contractor management, and documentation of work performed. This position will demonstrate leadership to all Transmission Line Engineering personnel with timely technical input and economic evaluations to support efforts to assure cost effective and technically balanced decision-making.

Responsibilities
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, resolution of problems in the area of electric line engineering. 
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities. 
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches, and able to make oral presentations to peers. 
  • Strives to continually improve job-related skills and performance while maintaining state-of-the-art technical and professional knowledge in their field of expertise. 
  • Expert in developing positive working relationships to effectively collaborate and provide transparency to departmental work activities. 
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Expert knowledge of company and industry codes, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures. 
  • Provides technical leadership and direction on a corporate or industry level in their field of expertise. 
  • Manage complex projects to completion and provide engineering direction throughout the project life cycle. 
  • Work with external engineering contractors to ensure project quality, constructability, as well as conformance to all company standards and applicable codes.
  • Provide technical support for the operation of all Company and customer electric transmission lines.
  • Research, specify, order and coordinate material purchases and establish stocking levels of major transmission line electrical equipment. 
  • Verify Transmission Line Engineering's processes and procedures are kept current with the latest and best industry safety requirements and engineering practices.
  • Receives input from Operations groups on performance of engineered facilities and electric systems; evaluates and improves the quality of future designs and processes within Engineering.
  • Participates in the restoration of Company transmission lines during storms and other emergencies.
Qualifications

Required for Selection:

Education

  • A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
  • 10 or more years of electric utility experience preferably with an electric utility experience. An active state licensed professional engineer.

Knowledge/Experience

  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering principles, and engineering computer applications such as AutoCAD, SAG-10, PLS-CADD, and Pole Foreman
  • Ability to read and interpret various types of civil structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering drawings such as electric schematic, electric line plan and profile, and land survey documents
  • An expert in basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.  Must be proficient in the selection and application of proper engineering principles and techniques
  • A comprehensive mastery of NESC codes and their applications
  • Experience working with local, state government, and special district organizations
  • Must have good planning, organizational, verbal and written communications skills.  Ability to perform duties effectively under emergency and contingency situations 
  • High level of knowledge in safe, reliable, and compliant electric transmission and power system operations and design
  • Ability to supervise, support, and guide employees and contractors in a technical environment
  • Able to coach and develop employees.  Ability to encourage teamwork and motivate participation 
  • Advanced ability of public speaking, presenting, and communicating to diverse personnel ranging from field employees to regulators
  • Possess strong PC skills for engineering, communications, reports, databases and spreadsheets 
  • Working knowledge of Root Cause Analysis
  • Comprehensive ability to effectively complete complex multiple projects concurrently, with little or no supervision
  • Has significant experience and ability to work with customers or contractors to solve complex technical issues and present the results
  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

Preferred for Selection:

  • Advanced material and labor estimating and project management skills
  • PMP certification 
  • Experience with the design and specification of engineered steel poles and lattice transmission towers
